Massachusetts Expands Wrong-Way Driver Detection Systems: Saving Lives on the Road (2026)

Massachusetts lawmakers are preparing to discuss a proposal to expand wrong-way driver detection systems across the state, building on an existing pilot program. Currently, the pilot program includes 16 detectors and multisensory alert systems, designed to warn drivers traveling the wrong way. State Senate Minority Leader Bruce Tarr emphasized the importance of integrating advanced technologies at the right locations: 'When the sensor is tripped, they create flashing LEDs, and also sound, again multisensory, trying to use everything possible to alert that driver that you're going the wrong way,' he said. The proposal also calls for additional signage and directional arrows on highways and off-ramps. 'There are a wide array of technologies here; we're not saying one or the other is preferred, we are saying we need to use the right thing at the right place,' Tarr stated. The initiative has been in development for about a year, following several fatal incidents involving wrong-way drivers. These include the death of Gloucester High School student Christopher Dailey, Endicott College Sgt. Jeremy Cole, and Trooper Kevin Trainor, who was killed in the line of duty while stopping a wrong-way driver. 'There are many things we can do; they are effective, and we can waste no time in doing them,' Tarr concluded.
